Trauma-Informed Toxic Job Recovery Workbook

The Trauma-Informed Toxic Job Self-Help Recovery Workbook helps survivors:

- identify common workplace abuse tactics

- design personalized self-defense strategies

- access culturally-specific healing practices

Difficulty finding BIPOC and LGBTQ+ clinicians makes self-help especially important for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ survivors of workplace racism and anti-LGBT discrimination.

Most therapists know that domestic abusers often leave hidden bruises, but are unaware that workplace abusers also attack in ways that minimize personal responsability and company liability. Social workers and psychologists are not typically trained on the specific injuries incurred from institutional betrayal, racial battle fatigue, or whistleblower retaliation.

Learning the language of workplace abuse helps us recognize workplace abuse patterns, which enables earlier detection and more effective self-defense.

This self-help workbook provides activities to understand the harm of workplace trauma.

Readers are encouraged to consult a therapist for workplace trauma healing through evidence-based trauma therapies like neurofeedback, EMDR, and Written Exposure Therapy.

Written for educational, self-help purposes, the workbook summarizes research on workplace abuse, with special attention to racial battle fatigue and anti-LGBTQ minority stress. Readers also learn about embodied trauma healing, post-traumatic growth, and tips to make HR reports work for and not against you, negotiating severance pay, and selecting a trauma-informed employment attorney and anti-racist, LGBTQ+ affirming therapist.

The workbook concludes with self-directed activities to help workplace abuse survivors consider the costs versus benefits of staying in or leaving a toxic job. Through writing prompts and artistic expression, readers are invited to interrupt stress hormone flooding with somatic activities and increase self-compassion through culturally affirming messages and resistance practices.
